The product

What exactly is konjac rice?

A blend of konjac powder, real rice flour, and water, shaped and dried like rice. Konjac is a root vegetable cooked with across Asia for centuries — the blend is what keeps a serving at 70 calories while still eating like rice. The full story is on our What is konjac? page.

Does it actually taste like rice?

It's the closest we've had — and we tested a lot of substitutes before making our own. The bite is very close to white rice, it takes on sauces the same way, and under a curry or stir-fry most people don't clock the difference. It's at its best as the base of a flavourful bowl.

What's in it?

Konjac powder, rice flour, water. That's the entire ingredient list.

Is it vegan and gluten-free?

Yes — it's plant-based with no animal ingredients, and it contains no gluten ingredients. As always, check the label on the bag if you have allergies.

Is it keto or zero-carb?

No — and we won't pretend otherwise. A serving has 14g of carbohydrate. What it cuts is calories: 70 per serving versus 160 for the same serving of uncooked white rice (USDA data).

Where is it made?

It's produced to our specification by our manufacturing partner in China — where konjac has been grown and processed for centuries — and made for Cut Kitchen Foods Inc. in Vancouver, Canada. Country of origin is printed on every bag.

Cooking & storage

How do I cook it?

Equal parts rice and boiling water, straight into a bowl. Cover, wait 15–20 minutes, fluff. Prefer the stove? Add rice to boiling water, take it off the heat, cover for 15 minutes, fluff. Either way: no draining.

Do I need to rinse or drain it?

No rinsing, no draining — the grains absorb their water completely. That's the point: no colander, no pot to scrub.

Can I meal-prep it?

Yes — it holds up well in the fridge for about 3 days in a sealed container. Reheat with a small splash of water to bring the texture right back.

Can I fry it?

Absolutely — day-old grains make excellent fried rice. High heat, a little oil, and treat it exactly like leftover rice.

How many servings are in a bag?

About 22 servings per bag, at ¼ cup dry (45g) per serving — roughly $1.36 per meal.

How should I store it?

Cool, dry, and resealed — the bag is resealable for exactly that reason. The best-before date is printed on the back.
